Everyday minimalist habits

Transitioning towards a minimalist lifestyle brings about a mindset shift - though we’re often inclined to first start decluttering our physical belongings, it begins to translate into other areas of our lives. It’s absolutely freeing to have less physical clutter and stuff to worry about, so it's only natural to see if we can bring that sense of peace and calm to other overwhelming areas of our lives.

Since becoming minimalist six years ago, I’ve realized that I’ve developed certain behaviors that allow me to stay grounded and also simplify my daily routine. Find these seven minimalist habits I’ve developed in the video on the left, and a summary of them below. I’d love to know if you also have any minimalist habits you find helpful, or even if they aren’t ‘minimalist,’ what things you find yourself doing on a daily basis that help slow things down in a fast paced world. Hope you enjoy this post and that it’ll bring some sense of peace and calmness through this time, and remind you of all that you have to be thankful for.

Seven habits to live simply

Below are my favorite habits to keep my lifestyle minimal and simple day to day. Consider trying one of these habits so you can focus on other important areas in your life.

Clear surface clutter

Things can pile up without much of a thought on surfaces, so put belongings away each morning or evening to have a clean start to your day

Go simple with your skincare

Invest in a few, quality products for an effective routine

Opt for little or no makeup at all - you're beautiful the way you are

Focus on a few things

Overwhelming to do lists are best tackled a few small tasks at a time - prioritizing first will give you a clearer mindset before you start your day

Tidy up regularly

Keeping things clean keeps your mind calm and at peace - 10 minutes is all you need perfect for a quick cleaning session of putting away dishes, or wiping down countertops to avoid a bigger clean up in the future

A clean space helps to create a clean mind

Limit social media

Advertisements and scrolling through your feed can inhibit gratitude and staying present

Keep social media to a minimum, and learn to unplug from your phone

Slow down and enjoy the little things

Whether you try a new recipe, have a delicious meal, or learn a new skill, take time to savor and appreciate the small things in life

Practice gratitude

Consider journaling or taking note of three things you’re thankful for at the end of each day

When we reflect on all that we're thankful for, we'll realize all of life's many blessings
